February 14, 2006
Dear Colleagues,
The Probation Officers Association of Ontario (POAO) is pleased to announce our proud sponsorship of the 1st annual "Probation Officers' Week" in Ontario. During the week of May 7 to 13, 2006 people from across the province will join together to recognize the tireless work that Probation Officers do to enhance community safety.
The American Probation and Parole Officers' Association (APPA) has sponsored its own "Probation, Parole and Community Supervision Week" for the past several years. As an affiliate organization, the POAO accepted an offer by our American colleagues to participate in that fine tradition. Since 2002, we have shared that special week of recognition every July with the APPA. We have recently decided to establish our own week in May of each year, separate and apart from the APPA but certainly in keeping with the same spirit.
May 7 to 13, 2006 has been set aside to honour those professionals who work as Probation Officers for the Ministry of Child and Youth Services and Probation & Parole Officers for the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. It also provides an opportunity for the general public to gain a better understanding of how PO's perform their duties in the face of escalating workloads, limited resources, and an ever-changing offender population.
Probation Officers continue to make a difference by way of assessing levels of risk, monitoring offenders' compliance with court orders, enforcing those orders, counselling offenders, and maintaining partnerships with other agencies and community groups within the greater Criminal Justice System. These professionals manage to do so while adapting to the latest technological advances and while being trained on the newest offender management methodologies. This is done in an effort to ensure the highest level of public safety.
The Government of Ontario recognizes the POAO as the representative voice for over 1,100 Probation/Probation and Parole Officers employed in Ontario. The week will focus on a few objectives as set out by the constitution of the POAO:
Promote good fellowship and esprit de corps among members
Educate and involve the community in corrections
Facilitate increased understanding of the specialized role of the PO
It is the intention of POAO to achieve these objectives through the promotion of special events and activities in communities across the province. Details will be announced at a later date.
We also want to salute all Probation Officers and thank them for everything they do to make our communities safer.
