History

The Probation Officers Association of Ontario was founded in 1952 with the inaugural meeting being held on September 11, 1952. The Association’s principal objectives where identified as: to promote professionalism, to foster fellowship among its’ membership and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and information. Regional Committees were established to ensure equal representation and accessibility, a publication of a newsletter was started and special committees were convened to address various topics of interest and/or concern.

The Association adopted its’ current name during the 1960’s. The Association continued to grow over the ensuing decades and the structure, roles and responsibility of the Executive Board became more defined. Membership increased and POAO continued to advocate in regards to the professionalism of Probation Officers and Probation and Parole Officers across the province of Ontario. Currently, POAO’s membership is over 450 members, with six Branches across the province and an active Executive Board.

An annual Symposium is organized and run each year by a Branch and this provides an opportunity for members to get together for learning opportunities, networking and educational upgrading. POAO continues to evolve to better reflect its’ membership and makeup.
