*******************************
"Why Join the POAO?" This question is often put to those who belong to the Association or are active in it. Kelly Tuovinen, a member since 1991 and currently a director on the Toronto Branch, provided the following to her colleagues:
The intrinsic value of belonging to a professional association, an association recognized by our federal counterparts, other provincial agencies and internationally.
To belong to an association that provides information to the politicians who make the policies under which we serve. This information is now being quoted on the floor of the Legislative Assembly in order to highlight the importance of our service in the community. Here is an excerpt from the last Budget Speech:
"The Probation Officers Association of Ontario told me we needed more probation and parole officers to improve community safety. I am announcing the addition of 165 new probation and parole officers to provide more intensive and frequent monitoring of offenders and to assist in restricting the movements of offenders serving sentences in the community."
To belong to an organization which can address concerns not governed by the Collective Agreement.
To belong to an association which has increased its profile in the media.
This increased profile leads the media to contact the POAO for comment on numerous issues. This enhances public knowledge of our profession and the issues that affect our communities.
To belong to an association that offers professional and social events at the annual Symposium and at the branch level.
To enjoy perks such as reduced rates to many attractions including the Royal Ontario Museum, Ontario Place, Canada's Wonderland, African Lion Safari and the Ontario Science Centre.
To become eligible for financial assistance of up to $250.00 for a field-related educational course.
To belong to an association that sits on the Provincial Safety and Security Committee and has had input into the review and amendment of security procedures for MCS.
To belong to an association that meets regularly with Assistant Deputy Minister, Community and Young Offender Services (MCS) and the Chair of the Ontario Board of Parole to discuss Probation and Parole issues.
To contribute, through local and provincial initiatives, to charities in the community through fundraising and donations by the Association.
To belong to an association recognized by both the Ministry of Community and Social Services and the Ministry of Correctional Services as the provider of quality training programs. This is evidenced by MCSS and MCS funding and support for the Symposium.
We all have our own reasons to join the Probation Officers Association of Ontario. Think about how you can convince others to join. We all benefit from an increased membership base. Each time we meet with officials from either Ministry, politicians or other community groups, they want to know whom we represent. The profile of the Association only becomes stronger with each new member. Let them know that we represent you!
Financial Assistance for University:
One of POAO's primary objectives is to encourage professionalism and adopt a desire for "life long learning" among it's members. All professionals, throughout their careers, should strive to improve themselves and better their skills. This is why the POAO developed the "POAO Educational Grant", as follows:
"The education grant be available to all full members in good standing taking University level course, which relate to the field of probation and parole. The grant limit is to be a maximum of 250.00 per course. This benefit is available to members to a maximum of $500 dollars per member. Request for grants through the education fund must be done so in writing including course information prior to course commencement then the member must subsequently provide proof of successful completion. Grants given to members under this fund are subject to the approval of the Provincial Executive and dependent on funding availability." (Amended April 2006)
The application is made by letter to the Policy and Planning Committee through the Protocol Director. For more information about this fund, please contact the protocol director.
Royal Ontario Museum
On June 13, 2001 POAO members were invited to attend and partake in the ROM's special exhibit/event - "Gift of the Gods - The Art of Wine and Revelry." The following "letter to the webmaster" was received soon aftewards:
Dear Webmaster:
I had the pleasure of attending a special event at the Royal Ontario Museum
with the POAO this past Wednesday evening. It was just fantastic! The room
was beautiful, there was a live band, lots of free-flowing Ontario wine and
plenty of delectable gourmet appetizers and sweets. Several MPPs were in
attendance, notably the Honourable Tim Hudak, Minister of Tourism, Culture
and Recreation. It was an event in appreciation of corporate and
association sponsors of ROM, to highlight their new exhibit: Gift of the
Gods: The Art of Wine and Revelry. I would encourage anyone with an
interest in wine and wine history to make it a point to attend this very
interesting exhibit.
Events such as this one underscore the additional benefits of joining the
Probation Officers Association of Ontario. It was a great chance to meet
other people in a pleasant and relaxing setting and a nice way to wind down
after a hard day at the office.
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone at the Central Branch beach
volleyball tournament coming up on the 28th of June. Ciao!
